College’s TACHE Chapter Announces Scholarship Allocations Totaling $4,800
Efforts of membership assisting four DMC students with educational costs during next academic year

“Volunteerism” is a key word among Del Mar College administrators, faculty and staff who are members of the institution’s chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education. Throughout the year, dedicated DMC employees conduct fundraising activities–such as bailes, barbecues and other events–to provide scholarships to students needing assistance in paying for their college education.

TACHE’s efforts have paid off for four Del Mar students. The chapter awarded to each student $1,200, which includes both the fall 2005 and spring 2006 semesters. The chapter will recognize the students during the annual luncheon the chapter holds for the DMC Board of Regents, scheduled for July 27.

Those students include:

• Rebecca Cavazos, a psychology major, who earned her GED (General Education Development) certificate with highest honors in Fall 2004 after being out of school for 15 years. Cavazos completed nine semester hours of credit classes with a 4.0 GPA this past spring.

• Jaime Garcia, a criminal justice major, who has completed 36 hours with a 3.71 GPA. He is a 2003 graduate of Miller High School.

• Mary A. Medina, a “pre” registered nurse education major, who has completed 61 hours with a 3.84 GPA. The 1986 graduate of Miller High School is a member of international honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, and the single-head of her household.

• Debra Ann Rodriguez, a criminal justice major, who has completed 66 hours with a 3.14 GPA. Rodriguez has been listed on the National Dean's List and was very active in NJROTC before graduating from Miller High School in 2002.

Of the recipients, Mike Anzaldúa, current TACHE president at Del Mar College, says, “We’re happy to have these four scholarship recipients join the ranks of so many other fine students with high GPAs and serious financial need who have received TACHE scholarships in the past. We strongly believe that their academic success will continue and that they will become valuable, contributing members of society.”
