Journalism Students Bring Home 25 Awards From TIPA Convention Last Month


And the winners are…

Del Mar College journalism students waited with bated breath after competition ended during the 2005 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) Convention held in Dallas recently. Once organizers announced all the winners, Del Mar students had won 25 awards in all.

The budding journalists won five awards in the high-pressure “Live Contest” competition, including one first place award for “editorial writing.” The live contest awards that DMC students competed for were in competition with college journalists from 65 other Texas colleges and universities.
Overall, students brought home seven first place awards in various categories out of the 25 they won.

The College’s competitive division includes Texas colleges and universities with enrollments of 10,000 students or more.

During the conference, DMC sophomore journalism major Emily Messer received one of 10 TIPA scholarships in competition with more than 40 other college students from across Texas. Messer participated during the College Spring 2005 Commencement on May 13. During the 2004-2005 academic year, Messer served in several capacities, including assistant editor of the College’s student newspaper, The Foghorn, editor of the DMC general magazine, The Voyageur, and as community relations director for the DMC Press Club.

Winners who placed in the “Live Contest” categories include Josh Hinton, First Place for Editorial Writing; Ben Lopez, Second Place for Radio News Writing; Stephan Noack, Second Place for Advertising Commercial Design and Honorable Mention for Front Page Design; and Edwin Vasquez, Honorable Mention for Spanish News Writing.

Winners who place in the “Newspaper” categories include Chuck Baker, First Place for Editorial Cartoon titled “State of the Union;” Stephan Noack, First Place for Photo Illustration; Peter Orchard, Second Place for Newspaper Illustration titled “Calaveras;” and Stanley Orchard, Third Place for Sports Column.
Winners who placed in the “Literary Magazine” categories include Fanny Chirinos, Second Place for the Feature Story titled “Date Rape;” Marlena Garcia, Third Place for the entry titled “Story Package;” Miguel Pena, Third Place for the Essay titled “Sex in the Media” and Third Place for entry titled “Story Package;” and Jerri Torres, Third Place for Feature Photo.

Winners who placed in the “General Magazine” categories include Ariel Garza, First Place for Picture Story titled “Chefs;” Ben Lopez, First Place for Picture Story titled “Chefs” and Third Place for News Photo; Emily Messer, First Place for Picture Story titled “Chefs,” Second Place for News Feature Story titled “Targeting the Youth Vote,” Third Place for News Feature Story titled “From Dropout to Del Mar” and Honorable Mention for “Cover Design;” Megan Flournoy, Third Place for Column-Essay; Stephan Noack, Honorable Mention for “Cover Design;” and Del Mar College Staff, Third Place for Overall Excellence.

In the “Radio” category, only one student, Ben Lopez, won First Place for his Spot Commercial PSA titled “Barking Lot.”

Begun in 1909, TIPA is the oldest collegiate student press association in the United States.

Over the years, contests have grown from three initial competitions to contests in general magazine, radio, television, online, two divisions of yearbook, two divisions of literary magazine and four divisions of newspaper, plus more than a dozen on-site contests during the annual convention.

Additionally, TIPA presents at least $4,000 per year in scholarships to students representing two- and four-year institutions.
