Summer Experiential Learning Experiences for Del Mar College Students:

A DMC faculty selection committee will identify high achieving second-year students with specific interests in pursuing careers in science. Second year students expressing interest in science related careers will be encouraged to apply to participate in a funded experiential learning experience in the summers of 2007 or 2008.

Participants will receive a stipend ($3,000 per summer), which reasonably can be expected to eliminate the need for outside employment. In return for the stipend, the student will conduct the equivalent of 10 weeks of full-time student contact in Dr. Cammarata's lab at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. A modest research supply allowance will also be provided to cover laboratory materials at TAMU-CC.
Possible areas of research are:

1) Molecular characterization of seagrass epiphyte organisms (DNA extraction, PCR, Gels, cloning and DNA sequencing).
2) Biochemical and/or molecular characterization of sunflowers stressed by arsenic (assays of metal and biochemicals, DNA extraction, PCR, Gels, cloning and DNA sequencing).

DMC students supported by stipends will serve as role models for other DMC students, heightening awareness of exciting lab research opportunities in biological sciences at TAMU-CC. Students selected to work in the TAMU-CC Summer Experiential Learning Experience will give a presentation to DMC students about their summer research activities.
