Bio-Technology
Program-Objectives:
(Associate
of Applied Science Degree)
The
Chemical Laboratory Technology (CLT) / Bio-Technology Program is
committed to preparing students for a career as a chemical laboratory
technician within the Chemical Process Industry (CPI) or in any
related laboratory-type job. The two-year curriculum is designed
to provide opportunities to assimilate chemical knowledge, develop
laboratory skills and competencies, and develop attitudes and abilities
consistent with teamwork which will prepare the student for job
entry, economic independence, occupational advancement, and career
development as a Chemical Laboratory Technician.
The Chemical Laboratory Technology (CLT) Program started in January
1999. This program is designed to prepare students for a career
in the Chemical Process Industry (CPI) or related chemical laboratory-type
jobs. Objectives of the program include:
A strong background in the appropriate
core sub disciplines of chemistry;
laboratory training using state-of-the-art instruments, materials
and techniques employed in the chemical industry;
appropriate safety training;
problem solving skills, including statistical analysis of data;
the skills and understanding necessary to be able to effectively
work as part of a team;
effective oral and written communication skills and proper record
keeping techniques.
To meet the requirements of this program, prospective chemical technicians
should begin their educational preparations while in high school
by taking at least one year of algebra and one year of a science,
preferably chemistry, that includes laboratory experience.
**Realizing that many students become aware of technical career
possibilities too late to satisfy college academic requirements,
Del Mar College offers a schedule of noncredit courses that will
allow students to meet the necessary requirements or prerequisites
for the program.
