Proposed Revision(s):

A2.3.16 The Department Chairs:  The Department Chairs of Del Mar College are appointed by the President each year from among the qualified members of the faculty.

A2.3.16.1 The following definitions will apply in the selection of the Department Chair.

A2.3.16.1.1 Basic Principles: The final authority for the selection and appointment of departmental chairs resides with the President.  In making such appointment decisions, the President may consider input from all interested constituents, using “best interest of the college” as the fundamental criterion for selection.  Faculty recommendations from the department and division levels will be given full consideration when making appointment decisions.   The administration will determine faculty sentiment concerning incumbent and prospective Department Chairs and will seriously take such sentiment into account.  Mechanisms for accurately gauging faculty opinions are essential.  A decision contrary to the expressed wishes of a majority of the faculty of the affected department requires a compelling reason.  In a system where the ultimate authority to select Department Chairs is vested in the administration, specific methods of including broad faculty participation in the selection process are essential to a harmonious, collegial environment.
