Clinical Affiliations
Clinical Rotations give students the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom. The Emergency Medical Services Professions program is committed to providing our students with the highest quality clinical experience possible.
CLINICAL AFFILIATIONS
The Clinical Coordinator carefully monitors the patient census in each of our clinical affiliates to ensure that sufficient numbers and varieties of patients are seen by the students.
The EMS Professions program maintains clinical affiliations with Christus Spohn Hospital—Corpus Christi which provides clinical rotations at its three campuses: Shoreline, Memorial, and South.
Christus Spohn Hospital –Corpus Christi—Shoreline is predominantly the cardiac hospital for the system and provides ER, Medical ICU, Cardiovascular ICU, Surgical ICU, Acute Coronary Care Unit, Renal, Cath Lab clinical rotations
Christus Spohn Hospital –Corpus Christi—Memorial is designated a Level Three Trauma Center by the Texas Department of State Health Services and is, therefore the main source for Emergency Department clinical rotations for all levels of EMS students. Other rotations provided at this facility are Surgery, ICU, Coronary Care Unit, Labor &Delivery, Out-patient Surgery, Respiratory Therapy.
Christus Spohn Hospital –Corpus Christi—South is the newest of the campuses and provides rotations in the Emergency Department, Labor & Delivery, ICU and Surgery
FIELD ROTATIONS
It is imperative that EMS students have the opportunity to apply their newly-gained knowledge at high quality, state of the art EMS providers. The Clinical Coordinator monitors the activity of the ambulance services with whom we are associated to ensure students gain the fullest experience possible.
The primary provider of Field Internship or “Ambulance Rotations” is the Corpus Christi Fire Department. CCFD employs over 300 EMS personnel. Receiving over 25,000 calls for service per year, they are the largest EMS provider in the Coastal Bend region. Students perform field internships at stations 1, 8, 9, 10, 13, & 14.
In addition, the program has affiliations with Robstown EMS, Aransas Pass EMS, Aransas County EMS, and Tri-County EMS—Ingleside.
Since the majority of all ambulance transports are non-emergency in nature, it is important for students to be exposed to non-emergency ambulance service. The program maintains an affiliation agreement with Advanced Emergency Medical Services for field internships.
Students in the final semester of the Paramedic program have the option of a field internship with Halo Flight the area’s flight ambulance service. Specifically, our students have the option of riding with the helicopter ambulance. Helicopters have certain height and weight requirements for personnel to ensure safety. Our students must meet those height and weight requirements.
