Basic Training Information


Entrance Requirements

  • Be 21 years of age before graduation from the Academy and possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess a high school diploma or possess a G.E.D and have completed 12 college hours
  • Meet Del Mar College admission standards and pass required entrance tests
  • Not have been on court ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class C misdemeanor within the last ten years
  • Not have been convicted of an offense above the grade of Class C misdemeanor within the last ten years
  • Never have been convicted of, pled guilty to, received court-ordered probation, received a deferred, adjudicated or unadjudicated sentence for any felony offense
  • Not be currently under indictment for any criminal offense
  • Not be prohibited by state or federal law from carrying or possessing firearms or ammunition
  • Be fingerprinted and submit fingerprint cards to the Academy for a records check
  • Not have been discharged from any military service under less than honorable conditions
  • Show no trace of drug dependency or illegal drug use and be physically sound and free from any defect, which may adversely affect the performance of training as evidenced by a medical exam (TCLEOSE form L2)
  • Be in satisfactory psychological and emotional health for training (TCLEOSE form L3)
  • Obtain a law enforcement referral and meet physical fitness standards

Application Process for the Basic Peace Officer Program

  1. Apply for admission to Del Mar College and take any required entrance test
  2. Take your test results to the Academy and pick up the Academy application
  3. Complete your portion of the application
  4. Take the application to a law enforcement agency for a background check, referral and fingerprinting
  5. Pass a medical examination, drug screen and psychological examination (L2 and L3 forms)
  6. Return the Application and above examination forms to the Academy
  7. Return the fingerprint cards to the Academy with a check or money order for $15
  8. Pass the physical fitness entrance standards as described below

Cost for the Basic Peace Officer Program

The Basic Peace Officer program is a 20 credit-hour College program.

Tuition and fee charges may be found in the College catalog costs pages.

A limited number of local grants are available to help defray tuition and fee costs.

Student can apply for Federal financial aid through the College financial aid office.

Student should plan on spending about $300 for uniforms, supplies and equipment.
