Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection
The Regional Police Academy offers an eight-hour in-service training course for police officers on "Anti-terrorism and Bomb Threats." The first half of the course discusses terrorism while the second half of the course discusses bombs and bomb threats. Additional, longer, courses are currently being considered.
A short non-credit course, titled "Introduction to Terrorism", will soon be available for the general public. This course is designed to inform the public of general terrorist threats, methods of terrorism, along with local and worldwide current events. Ideas for public involvement and assistance will be discussed.
The third area that the Academy is actively involved in relates to training for the United States Navy. Three Force Protection courses are taught by the Academy and these courses are restricted to Naval personnel. Sailors interested in this training should contact their command or local training authority. Courses offered include:
Armed Sentry Course (ASC)
Course graduates will be able to perform
specialized duties to protect their unit and its personnel. Students
learn to deter, identify, track, and assess potential threats, implement
immediate actions, and protect Department of Navy assets and personnel
by utilizing proper force protection procedures and watch standing techniques.
Force Protection Fundamental Training
(FPFT)
Course graduates will be able to perform
specialized duties to protect their unit, its mission and its crew members
whether pier side, at sea, or at a naval air facility from acts of terrorism
or sabotage. Team members will learn to prevent the threat whether from
the pier, small boat, or any other means from penetrating their unit, by
utilizing proper force protection procedures and tactical team movements.
Shipboard Security Engagement Weapons
(SSEW)
Course graduates will be able to perform
specialized duties to protect their ship and its crew members. SSEW
training shall include training in the knowledge and skills in the use
of shipboard provided handguns, shoulder weapons and support weapons and
provides basic information in the operation, maintenance and firing of
small arms in support of Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO).
Course includes weapons safety; range safety and range firing procedures;
operation, maintenance, and firing of the 9 mm, M-14 or M-16 rifle,
and 12 gauge shotgun. Students will be placed in stress and combat
shooting situations and will be required to complete a comprehensive final
practical shooting exercise.
