    Dr. Fernando Figueroa

    figueroaDr. Fernando Figueroa began his tenure as the new Provost/Vice President of Instruction at Del Mar College in December 2009. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Medieval English Literature degree with a minor in Philosophy in 1993 as well as a Master of Arts in English degree in 1992 from Louisiana State University. In 1986 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English degree from Loyola University.

    As the College’s Provost and Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, Dr. Figueroa serves as the chief instructional officer with responsibilities for the administrative leadership and management of the academic programs, updating of the academic plan and strategies, allocation of instructional resources in support of the strategic goals, and developing/sustaining articulation agreements and community-based partnerships that enhance the institutional mission and the students’ success. He coordinates his responsibilities to work with the faculty, staff, and other College administrators including the financial and student services leadership to advance the institutional mission and to enhance shared governance. His supervision encompasses the academic divisions, Accreditation and Compliance Services, Learning Resources, Grants and Sponsored Research, Teaching and Learning Center, E-Learning Services, and Early College Programs as well as the Faculty Coordinators for Assessment of Student Learning, Quality Enhancement Plan, Developmental Education, and Supplemental Instruction. His responsibilities also include the oversight of assuring the hiring of credentialed faculty and the evaluation, promotion, and tenure of faculty. He is the regional accreditation liaison.

    Dr. Figueroa’s administrative experience in higher education includes serving as Dean of University Studies at Tyler Junior College (TJC) and as Dean of Arts and Letters at Morton College. He worked on the accreditation leadership teams in preparation of the SACS reaffirmation processes at these institutions. Inclusively, he served on the leadership team that prepared Baton Rouge Community College for its inaugural accreditation by SACS. He also created the Academic Standards Committee at TJC and served on the Strategic Plan Leadership Team at the institution. As a member of a state-wide group with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, he worked on a general education initiative collaboratively with higher education representatives to produce academic excellence in all Texas community colleges.

    Furthermore, his experience entails his work in establishing processes to enhance institutional strategic planning and effectiveness and in aligning and implementing instructional procedural guidelines.

    His faculty appointments include his instructional work with TJC, University of Texas at Tyler,
    River Parishes Community College, Baton Rouge Community College, Louisiana State University,
    Loyola University, and University of New Orleans.

    He founded the Loyola University Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta English Honorary Society in 1986.
    His professional development includes participation at AACC, SACS, and NISOD conferences as well as presentations and publications of authored work.
