MINUTES
SELF-STUDY STEERING COMMITTEE
February 10, 1999, 1:30--3:55 p.m., VB-170

Attending: John M. Crisp, Mike Gadell, Homer Garza, Noe Guerra, Dolores Huerta, Mattie Marcum, Vickie Natale, Mary Peña, Jim Pierce (Chair), Lisa Welch.

Not Attending: William Mareth.

Availability of Subcommittee Reports: Chair Jim Pierce reported that to date nine principal committee reports had been submitted to the Steering Committee and that the Computer Resources and Services report was scheduled to be submitted on February 15. He said that he had reviewed a draft of the Faculty report with the Faculty committee. Noe Guerra, liaison to the Educational Support Services principal committee, said that he had met with the committee on the previous Friday; he reported that the committee's draft needs much work.

Need for Wider Access to Subcommittee Reports: Pierce raised the question of whether hardcopies of the drafts of the subcommittee reports should be distributed, as well as posted on the self-study webpage. The consensus of the discussion was that the reports needn't be distributed as hardcopy as long as they were in preliminary form. Anyone who wants a copy of a report may get one from Pierce, however. John M. Crisp said that all of the self-study documents can be reached from an internet connection in any faculty or administrative office and that access from other computers or from off-campus had originally been available only with a username and a password. When a new server was brought online the password system could no longer be used and, at present, access to self-study webpages is not available from off-campus or from any on-campus computer other than those in administrative or faculty offices. He said that he would contact Computing Services about the re-establishment of the password system.

Schedule for Subcommittee Reports: The subcommittees will report to the Steering Committee according to the following schedule (All meetings will be in VB-117):

In the meantime, the subcommittee for Educational Program (the longest section) will begin to examine the first five pages of the draft at 2:00 p.m. on February 11 in EC-210.

Open "Hearings": The open "hearings" for Institutional Advancement, Financial Resources, Student Development Services, and Special Educational Activities will be held during the first four weeks in April, respectively.

Loss of Part-Time Secretary: Pierce mentioned that the self-study part-time secretary, Mari Garcia, would be leaving for a new job on February 11 and that Kelly Services was looking for a replacement.

Student Development Services Subcommittee Report: The Student Development Services Subcommittee (Jim Pierce, Mary Peña, Lisa Welch) submitted for discussion their report on their review of the Student Development Services draft. The report will be completed and submitted to the Student Development Services principal committee within three working days.

Next Meeting: The next meeting of the Steering Committee will be held in VB-170 on Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at 1:30 p.m.

Minutes prepared by John M. Crisp.
