Review of Learning Resources Draft: Lisa Welch led the Committee through a review of the Learning Resources draft, during the course of which the following points were raised:
- A number of surface errors were pointed out and duly noted.
- Mike Gadell pointed out the inconsistencies in the terms used to refer to the libraries.
- Under the imperative that begins "The library and other learning resources must...": The Committee engaged in considerable discussion regarding whether the second suggestion should be included and agreed that the suggestion that the Division of Learning Resources should undergo an evaluation similar to instructional program review should remain here and be added to Institutional Effectiveness, as well, and expanded to include all non-instructional areas.
- Under the imperative that begins "Professional assistance should be available...": The Committee agreed to remove the suggestion and to remove the last sentence of the narrative.
- Under the imperative that begins "Libraries and other learning resource centers must...": Remove the reference to the standard of 95,934 sq. ft. as being non-applicable.
- Under the same imperative, in the sentence that begins "The Library Director reports that renovations...": Change 1999 to 1998.
- Under the imperative that begins "Institutions must provide access to...": Noe Guerra will supply more information to Jim Pierce regarding the references and resources that are available.
- Under the imperative that begins "Access to the library collection must...": Delete the suggestion.
- Under the imperative that begins "Librarians, teaching faculty and researchers must...": Some departments are missing from the list of departments. Guerra will check and advise Pierce.
- Under the imperative that begins "...and should have a procedure...": The Committee finding was changed to noncompliance, but Pierce will ensure that the procedure called for is not in the weeding policy.
- Under the imperative that begins "Institutions should supplement their traditional...": Delete the long list of resources.
- Under the imperative that begins "Cooperative agreements with other libraries...": Pierce asked whether cooperative agreements listed under another "must" statement should be included here, as well, and the Committee agreed that they should.
- Guerra suggested including reciprocal borrowing agreements with area high schools among the cooperative agreements.
- Pierce will check on whether the agreements are actually being evaluated.
- Under the imperative that begins "Libraries and other learning resources must be adequately staffed...": In the list of staff, include only the qualifying degree.
- Under the same imperative, Guerra said that thought the library staff does not meet the ACRL minimum of eight professional librarians, the libraries employ several part-time librarians. Change to compliance and delete the suggestion.
Next Meeting: The Steering Committee will meet again on: Tuesday, October 19 at 2:00 p.m. in VB-170. The Committee will continue with the Learning Resources draft and will review the Institutional Effectiveness draft.
