Attending: John M. Crisp, Mike Gadell, Homer Garza, Noe Guerra, Dolores Huerta, Mattie Marcum, William Mareth, Mary Peña, Jim Pierce (Chair), Lisa Welch.
Not Attending: Vickie Natale.
Dr. Friedman's Schedule: Chair Jim Pierce reviewed with the Committee Dr. Friedman's schedule for his visit on November 4 and 5. He will be arriving at 2:30 on November 4 and leaving at 3:10 on November 5; in between he will meet with the Steering Committee, President Dicianna, Vice President Armenta, and Dean Natale, as well as Don Tyler and Rosie Garcia.
Agenda: The Steering Committee will review the Financial Resources draft on Tuesday, November 2.
Review of the Educational Program Draft: Mike Gadell led the Committee through a review of the final part of the Educational Program draft, during the course of which the following points were raised:
- A number of surface errors were pointed out and duly noted.
- In imperative #61: Gadell suggested making it clear that professors must be evaluated every three years. The second, third, and fourth paragraphs should be rewritten for concision and, generally, Part I of the self-study survey should be used, rather than Part II. Finally, in this response, as well as others, the opening sentence should be rewritten to correspond with the finding.
- In #62: Delete the Suggestion.
- In #64: Rewrite the earlier paragraphs for concision and delete the chart.
- In #66: Pierce suggested adding data concerning adjuncts to this response.
- In #67: Delete the Suggestion and revise the prose in the direction of concision.
- In #68: Delete the chart, referring to what is done, rather than reporting the results.
- In #70: Attempt to reduce the size of the chart.
- In #72: Relocate the tables to the end of the section.
- In #73: Delete the Suggestion and make the Recommendation specific to Dental Assisting.
- In #74: Delete the longer chart, moving some of the information into the third paragraph. Perhaps keep the first chart. Drop the chart that shows the committee meeting dates, but synthesize the information in prose.
- In #75: Delete the first chart and summarize the information in prose, especially that having to do with fall of 1998, rather than 1997. If program length can be shown to be in line with other colleges, the finding might be changed to Compliance.
- In #76: Move the five "should"s that follow this "must" statement to follow the statement directly in the text, synthesizing the responses and producing a finding of Noncompliance.
- In #80: Make the first sentence consistent with the finding.
- In #83: Remove the center column from the chart.
- Gadell mentioned the "Works Cited" pages, and Crisp said that a student worker had already been engaged in collating the lists of works used by the various committees.
Next Meeting: The Steering Committee will meet again on Tuesday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m. in VB-170. The Committee review of the Financial Resources draft.
