MINUTES
SELF-STUDY STEERING COMMITTEE
October 5, 1999, 2:07--4:02 p.m., VB-170

Attending: John M. Crisp, Mike Gadell, Homer Garza, Noe Guerra, Dolores Huerta, Mattie Marcum, Vickie Natale, Jim Pierce (Chair), Lisa Welch.

Not Attending: William Mareth, Mary Peña.

Visit by Visiting Committee Chair: Chair Jim Pierce reported that he had spoken last week with the chair of the SACS visiting committee, Dr. Frank Friedman. Friedman will tour both campuses on November 4 and 5 and will talk with the President, the Vice President of Instruction and Student Development, the Steering Committee, and the self-study Institutional Effectiveness Committee. He wants to see the two workrooms and to stay at the Holiday Inn where the visiting team will be quartered.

I.S.D. Council Meeting: Pierce reported the following information from the I.S.D. Council meeting of October 5: The editor of the Addendum is Rachel Perkes. The initial drafts of the institutional responses to the recommendations and suggestions are due to her on October 8. She will produce a draft of the Addendum by October 25.

Other Discussion: Mike Gadell asked whether the Report should identify recommendations and suggestions that were originally made ten years ago during the last self-study, but never remedied. Pierce pointed out that such recommendations and suggestions are ordinarily noted in the text of the responses and suggested that the Summary might be a good place to note them again. Further, he said the Committee might suggest a formal tracking method for ensuring that the problems are remedied.

Pierce mentioned that the Introduction and Section I will be up on the web site by Thursday and requested that Steering Committee members review them for the meeting on October 12.

Faculty Files: The Steering Committee reviewed 100 faculty files for credentialing and discovered six problem files.

Next Meeting: The Steering Committee will meet again on: Wednesday, October 6 at 2:00 p.m. in VB-300. The Committee will review the Faculty draft.

Minutes prepared by John M. Crisp.
