SELF-STUDY STEERING COMMITTEE
September 28, 1999, 2:03--3:40 p.m., VB-300
Attending: John M. Crisp, Mike Gadell, Homer Garza, Noe Guerra, Dolores Huerta, Mattie Marcum, William Mareth, Vickie Natale, Mary Peña, Lisa Welch..
Not Attending: Jim Pierce.
Review of Faculty Personnel Files: In Chair Jim Pierce's absence, John M. Crisp acted as chair. The Steering Committee reviewed approximately fifty files of instructors, both full-time and part-time, for proper credentials, clearing all but two.
Continuation of the Review of the Draft of Physical Resources: Noe Guerra continued his review of the Physical Resources draft; the following points were raised:
- Regarding the "should" statement beginning "There should be a written schedule for regular maintenance....": Mike Gadell pointed out that the second sentence in the Committee's response looks to the future; he wondered if the point might better be left for the Addendum.
- Under Section 6.4.3 and "General Safety": Guerra suggested the possibility of including sexual harassment in the list for which the administration has produced procedures. Gadell suggested changing the wording of the lead-in to the list to something other than "emergencies" or "disasters."
- In the second paragraph under "General Safety": Guerra suggested indicating how "Information for Your Safety" is distributed.
- Under the list of security practices: Gadell suggested mentioning that neither the parking stickers nor the bar-coded badges are required.
- In the same list: Dolores Huerta suggested making it clear that "Asset Security" is a security firm.
- Under "Responses to the Self-Study Survey": Someone questioned whether the report should say "...rodents have been seen on campus."
- Under "Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention": Gadell mentioned that the "Heads-Up Committee" was created only for compliance with the requirements of the grant.
- Under "Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention": Huerta suggested adding "Nueces County" to "Sheriff's Department."
- Under "Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance": Guerra questioned whether more should be said about this area, given the money that has been spent to bring the campus toward compliance.
- Under "Hazardous Material": Capitalize "handbook."
- Under the suggestion "The committee suggests that the College complete the requirements for ADA compliance.": Consider mentioning the noncompliance of the weight room and swimming pool, or, more likely, mentioning it in the narrative regarding ADA.
- Under the imperative "Administrative responsibility for environmental health....": Gadell suggested the possibility of mentioning that the position had gone unfilled for around two years.
- Under 6.4.4: In the third paragraph: "facilities" is misspelled.
Crisp asked if the entire Steering Committee present was in agreement with the findings of compliance and noncompliance as reported in the draft. All agreed.
Schedule: Crisp briefly reviewed the schedule of meetings through October 27.
Next Meeting: The Steering Committee will meet again on: Wednesday, September 29 at 2:00 p.m. in VB-170. The Committee will review the drafts of Information Technology and Organization and Administration.
