SELF-STUDY STEERING COMMITTEE

Attending: John M. Crisp, Mike Gadell, Homer Garza, Dolores Huerta, Mattie Marcum, William Mareth, Mary Peña, Jim Pierce (Chair), Lisa Welch..

Review of Revised Report--Information Technology Resources and Systems: Homer Garza reviewed this document; the following points were raised:
- During the course of discussion, several surface errors and typos were pointed out; they were noted and the document was amended.
- Under the "must" statement beginning "An institution must provide evidence...": A discrepancy in the number of labs and lab computers available on campus was noted.
- Under the "must" statement beginning "Information technology resources must...": Consider removal of the third paragraph.
- Under the "must" statement beginning "Information technology resources must...": Remove the asterisks and use a subheading.
- Under the "must" statement beginning "Information technology resources must...": Change the finding to "Noncompliance" and make the suggestion that begins "The College should evaluate..." into a recommendation.
- Throughout: Ensure that the perspective is fall 1998.
- Under the "must" statement that begins "Although the diversity...": Ensure that the "Music Department's lab" is the midi-lab.
- Under the "must" statement that begins "There must be provision for ongoing training...": The Committee discussed whether the response should include a suggestion that a full-time trainer be hired, whether a full-time trainer should be mentioned as one of several options, or whether a full-time trainer should be included as part of the narrative, as it currently is.
- Under the "must" statement that begins "Policies for the allocation...": Questions were raised about whether the response addressed the issue of consistency with the institution's purpose and goals; Crisp will try to add more on "consistency."
- Under the "must" statement that begins "Appropriate security measures...": Jim Pierce suggested including information about virus protection.
- Mattie Marcum suggested including the notion of the expense of the new technologies in the summary.
Review of Revised Report--Organization and Administration: Mary Peña reviewed this document; the following points were raised:
- During the course of discussion, several surface errors and typos were pointed out; they were noted and the document was amended.
- In the Introduction: Use the status date, November 30, 1998.
- Under the "must" statement that begins "The document must specify...": Include the idea that some Regents represent districts, others are at-large.
- Delete the listing of advisory committees and perhaps include them in an appendix.
- Under the "must" statement that begins "The institution must publish official documents": Include the policy manual as a source of the organizational chart.
- Under the "must" statement that begins "The institution must publish official documents": Change the finding to Noncompliance because of the inaccuracy of a number of the documents.
- Under the "must" statement that begins "Administrative officers must possess...": Include the qualifications of the administrative officers who report to the president, perhaps in a chart form.
- 6.6 Related Corporate Entities: It still needs to be done.
Next Meeting: The Steering Committee will meet again on: Tuesday, October 5 at 2:00 p.m. in VB-170. The Committee will review personnel files.
