Question 1: In the last five years I have been involved in the development or review of the mission statement in:
Other ways:
7 programs with accreditation self-studies.DMC selects only those persons that DMC feels will proceed as selected--very biased selection. Change that and you'll get a more honest result.
Question 2: What do you need to be able to more fully and effectively use the technology that you already have available?
Internet.Advanced training sessions in Lotus, WordPerfect. Beginning training sessions in database, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Time.
Workshops on computer software.
More in-depth training. There need to be classes for beginners, intermediates, and expert level also. Everyone needs to have matching programs and computers so you can save on a disk and share information.
More intensive and in-depth training.
Training.
I need to have more training on WP6, Par Score, Par Test and Word software. I need more training on the Internet. Before a big project is undertaken by the dept., we need professional advice so that all equipment will be compatible. We buy things so that the up to date technology will be compatible and then when we start to use it, the equipment does not do what it's supposed to do. I would like to have the time to work with my new equipment but we are so worked to death here with needless paperwork we don't have the time to be more productive or learn new equipment. Instructors need to be trained more on the E-mail (Profs) and the Internet.
More on the job training (offering training in the am/pm hours) and being able to use different software.
I need my computer upgraded to what faculty have, otherwise I cannot pull up a file on my software because I do not have software they have.
More training classes, possibly individual.
Cooperation with management to set aside time to use these services.
Faster program and printer.
Attend training seminars and conventions to be able to keep up with current technological trends.
Training opportunities for software and technology w/o needing admission and enrollment in college, i.e. staff training for non-credit for personal enrichment. On-going training offered more than once to accommodate busy schedules.
Updated computer software and printer.
More training on the technical part.
Time and my last computer disk.
I will need more training. The training that has been offered is not offered at the times that I can take advantage of it.
Dedicated tech support personnel on-campus specializing in Macintosh systems and applications.
More training.
Access to Resources.
An adequate phone system w/number selected options. Computer with adequate memory to execute programs at the click of a mouse without having to re-boot system.
Continue to offer computer training for staff, maybe the dates/times could be more specific for each dept. I feel that the FAO staff misses out on opportunities like this due to heavy work load/time of year.
More training in Word, PowerPoint, Internet, Excel, and Lotus for personal enrichment.
Would like to have Word, Excel, and PowerPoint installed. I have attended several training sessions offered by DMC, and they have been very helpful. I realize the instructors are limited to how much they can teach us within a certain time frame, but I think it would be helpful to have a 30 minute discussion afterwards to see how fellow employees are now utilizing their software.
Question 3: Do you have any unique computer or technology needs not assessed in this questionnaire?
More classrooms, more parking, and more restrooms. More space for computer labs for students.Internet access at home.
Not enough training in Mac-based computer equipment/use.
Tech support is the main problem, as well as cross platform issues (PC to Mac-based, and so forth).
Internet access.
Internet.
Question 4: What are your major concerns about the use of technology at Del Mar College?
Security. That everyone has the opportunity to learn how to effectively use all programs to service the students and run the college cost effectively.
More site licenses should be purchased for programs that are extensively used.
We order all this new equipment and nothing works in conjunction with anything else. In theory it should work but it does not.
I want to be able to be more efficient when I know more about software and use it.
Internet is not available to everyone (staff).
I feel everyone should have the same types of software so that if something is needed anyone can pull it up on their computer.
Training.
Employees should be trained on the mainframe.
Not having enough knowledgeable personnel to be able to use this technology to its full potential.
Continue to offer training for faculty for use in classroom.
I feel we are very far behind, especially in the use of software.
Applicability.
Not enough equipment available and class time availability.
There are discrepancies and imbalances in the distribution of new technology among faculty and staff (those who really need new technology don't get it, or have to wait, while those who have no need for new or state-of-the-art technology have ready access).
Have no opinion really, but I think I need more training in computer skills to create effective reports for office.
Access.
Students have much more electronic data capability when compared to the technology employees work with on a daily basis. Most employees are required to be knowledgeable on up-to-date issues regarding the student population. Employees are limited in the technological area.
Will we ever catch up? Just as soon as I got proficient with WP 5.1 along came WP 6.1. So now I'm proficient in WP 6.1 and another version has come out. Also, I understand Word is becoming very popular.
Question 5: Please list any long-term safety hazards or maintenance problems on Del Mar campuses which you have observed. Please be very specific.
Physical Facilities refuses to repair drinking fountain by MC214. Students have to go downstairs for water. The condition of the sidewalks is dangerous in some area of the campus.
Clutter and broken sidewalks.
Lighting, more of it is needed in the evenings and security, there needs to be more.
Fire exits and first aid.
Cracked sidewalks and ducts in buildings need to be thoroughly cleaned.
Not enough emergency lighting in the dental hygiene clinic and the dental assisting classroom GHS 123. Also, not enough emergency lighting in the radiology lab HS 120. When we lose power, these areas are pitch black and the students and patients cannot get out easily.
Parking and uneven pavements.
Our department has put in a maintenance requisition on some fallen wallpaper since 97 and has had no one fix it. The temperature in our classrooms is always messed up. Either too cold or too hot.
Parking lots are too narrow when two cars are turning opposite each other. More support bars are needed on porches when students exit building.
In the administration building on West Campus, the men's bathroom has a ventilation system that is wasting air conditioning. The motorized exhaust fan is oversized for the job.
Poor housekeeping carpenter shop in maintenance building. Unnecessary fenced in area.
Concrete base on light post is crumbling. Light post could possibly fall over and injure someone. This same light post has exposed electrical wiring. Light post is located in parking lot behind White library near rear entrance to library.
The sidewalks in front of the library are off where they're supposed to be connected. I have seen handicapped and non-handicapped people fall.
During heavy or continuous rain, the windows (facing north of the studies?) leak badly.
GHS building is too cold most of the time.
Obviously, the construction on campus is a problem, but it appears every reasonable effort is being made to correct that.
Poor lighting, and asbestos, still exists on campus.
Fire alarms are not adequate for hearing impaired persons. Wheelchair access ramps are not helpful because they are constructed poorly.
No check or inspection procedure to make sure Del Mar gets the best contract work.
There is only one exit for the Fin. Aid office--this is a fire hazard along with the safety problem (pertaining to irate students). All or most of the other offices in this building have 2 exits, and most are not even half the size of FAO office. I know that the new construction should help this problem. The A/C in the Harvin Center, particularly downstairs, and sometimes only the FAO office, does not work well in the summer. Every year we go days at a time with no a/c--this just adds to the stress already related to financial aid.
The need to keep bathrooms clean for students especially during the early hours of registration. There is a continual use of the bathrooms in this building (Administration), but only minimal cleaning of bathrooms and also spillages of water, coffee in the hallways during this busy time. Our morning help seems to spend an enormous time visiting with clerical/secretarial staff.
Question 6: If you have had positive or negative experiences with any of the services listed in question 71, please describe.
Campus security personnel probably need more training. Another employee and I worked late one night to meet a deadline. Security was called to let us out of the building. Before we reached our cars they had already left the area in their little golf cart.It would be a tremendous help for Del Mar to have child care services. As you know, there are many single parents that attend Del Mar. This would be very convenient for them to have here. There are also many that do not attend because of no transportation or no babysitter. Also it's not fair for a student to get a parking ticket sticker, the college should have enough parking for all. Another thing is that DMC should not allow for anyone to get a ticket because many who come to school are on a tight or low budget. Most important of all, their goal is to get an education!!!
I hear a lot of students complain about the financial aid area. They have to wait for 1« hours or more to get to a counselor that talks down to them or makes them feel like an idiot. I have sat in those lines myself and know this to be true.
Generally the staff in most offices seem to have a genuine desire to serve the needs of our students. Unfortunately, there are a few who seem to consider their time spent in the office as just a job and don't take the time to find out what is going on in the school.
Parking.
Consideration of a parking garage for student use would help the parking situation - I know that there would probably need to be more security - wouldn't this outweigh the risks of students parking in the local neighborhoods or across Ayers or Baldwin?
I have had only positive experiences with Del Mar in general.
All experiences have been "okay" neither very positive or very negative.
Parking. It's been so bad for so long, that it's a tradition.
Placement - routine has been maintained for many years (stagnated), The same old fashioned way--they need to update how they do things. Financial Aid - they are rude and Student Devt. same as Placement.
None other than long lines.
I have had several complaints about the Financial Aid Office both in the long wait outside the door and the uninformed personnel. The office does not seem to have adequate personnel to take care of students. Students should be screened about their specific need (ex-military, and others should be informed of their ineligibility) before the student waits in line for 2-3 hours.
Question 7: What necessary student services are not provided at Del Mar College?
Day Care.Child Care.
Orientation, I think is very important for the student. It avoids frustration, getting upset, feeling like a lost puppy. It will help the students with encouragement and not discouragement. In my opinion orientation should be mandatory or at least be done once a month. It will benefit most students. Lighting outside is not adequate, there are several areas where it's scary to walk to classes and the parking lots. Nurses station for student services needed. It is very important to have one in campus for emergencies. Anything could happen and ambulances sometimes take a while to get here. I think students would feel comfortable and at ease knowing that there would be someone here in campus to handle sudden emergencies. Especially those that have bad health and are taking medication. Security, there needs to be more.
Child care services, degree plans offered on Saturday/Sundays for people who work full-time Monday-Friday. This should include internships and clinicals for health science programs. This would truly benefit people who want to do a career change and then they won't have to give up their immediate jobs to do this.
Will be fantastic to have child care, not only for students but also for faculty and staff.
Child care.
Adult and child day care, a better cafeteria, vending machines that offer more than candy/cokes, and a health care center.
Child care and more financial aid for part-time students.
Having a food bar open at night for students taking evening classes and studying in the library. Also, areas in the Student Center for studying with food and drink.
Child care.
On-line services to students' homes.
Validation stickers after 12:30 Fridays /not on Saturday nor on Sunday.
Information Center - lobby area across from counseling greatly needed. There is always someone needing assistance and no one to ask that's right there.
Adequate parking.
Day care and adequate parking.
Public access to a TDD for hearing impaired - the library hides the one TDD they have and even do not allow an employee who is deaf to use it.
Child care services, 5 story parking garage, personal/problem solving methods for students who tend to go into detail with clerks.
Child Care services.
Question 8: From question 72: If no, please explain.
No, because part-time students usually come at night, (not all of them) and nothing is geared to the night students, still the night student is coming from work and has a short time to spend.Financial aid requires full-time hours to provide max help. If more students are part-time, more financial aid should be provided. Some students are having to work part-time or have families to take care of. Child care is needed for the single parent and working families.
Need more evening and weekend classes.
Try and offer evening classes one day a week like TAMU-CC does. Part-time students, they do not always know everything Del Mar offers. Throughout the semester, information given at the beginning could be given again.
People that work and come to evening classes are up a creek when they cannot get their validation stickers after 7:30 p.m. This in essence creates a serious problem for personnel working on weekends. It is a problem that needs to be restored. Campus closes at noon on Fridays.
College should offer day care services on campus.
Many part-time students work and may not have the time between attending classes and working.
They need to make sure classes that they need are available when they can attend.
Question 9: From question 73: If no, please explain.
I have not heard of anything they have done. There are other cultures at DMC, but I do not see many programs.
I feel Student Activities doesn't provide any support for the students. I realize they provide orientation and distribute weekly flyers but 2 full-time (one day/one evening) coordinators on the east campus and one full-time on west campus plus secretaries are not needed. In order to justify all these employees -- the program should be a much higher standard than it is currently.
Well if you consider them being on an all day break to contribute to the cultural, social, moral, intellectual and physical development.
Student development office seems to be very unmotivated. They never seem to have "the student" in mind, unless it is a friend that comes to visit their office.
Physical development? I am not aware how student development covers that.
Student development is not efficient - Keep the same sort of services the same way they've had for many, many years. They need to step up into the 90's and the year 2000, but they're too lazy to do the job.
Question 10: Additional Comments:
My opinions and suggestions are geared toward making a better Del Mar College and also because of my past experiences here. I want for all other students to be knowledgeable of as much information as possible. Last but not least is "attitude," this is the key to a better college. If all of us would strongly work on this, it would build a community of respect and good relationships amongst the departments, a togetherness and trust, like a family neighborhood. This would create a unity among college (staff, faculty) and the student. For that reason, I strongly suggest that there is a need for workshops or classes on "attitude." We (all DMC employees) need to know and learn how to talk to people. The right way (in any circumstances) would not only make the student feel good but also that we care and think highly of Del Mar. Again, I suggest that this "workshops or classes" be mandatory or be given at least once a month with lecture and a question and answer time. I stop with this conclusion, "We are here to serve the public."
