| In February 2003, Gabriel Garcia and his significant other, Frances Cano, approached the SBDC for assistance with a small business loan. Both Gabriel and Frances already owned a business apiece. Mr. Garcia had been owner/operator of a small car lot and an auto body shop for over three years. Frances had just within the past year purchased a convenience store. An opportunity arose when an acquaintance of Gabriel’s suggested that they take over his towing operation when he retired. After several months of observing and researching the business, Gabriel and Frances decided that the venture looked not only promising, but very profitable. Gabriel and Frances worked with the SBDC to put together a business plan and financial projections that were submitted to Accion, Texas for review. After preliminary approval, an SBDC representative conducted a collateral inspection (vehicle). In May 2003, Gabriel was approved for his loan and purchased the towing business. The previous tow truck driver continued with the business and Gabriel and Frances work together to market and administer the operation. This business loan resulted in the creation of one full-time and one part-time job and the retention of another full-time position.
