Faced with the closure of the abrasives and sandblast equipment distribution facility for which he was manager, Joseph (Joey) Montez was motivated to start his own surface preparation company. Joey realized that the departure of his employer created a special opportunity for him to provide sales and services to an industrial customer base he already knew!
With not much more than a business name, but with plenty of experience and ambition, Joey Montez contacted the Del Mar College Small Business Development Center in May 2003, for help in structuring a business plan and loan proposal. SBDC counselor Michael North assisted him in preparing a business plan, cash flow projections, personal financial statement, and loan proposal requesting the necessary funding through SBA's LowDoc loan program.
After the plan and financials were complete, Joey Montez approached The Bank of Alice for the financing and both the bank and the SBA approved him for the loan. Joey Montez is grateful for the assistance that the Small Business Development Center provided to him. Joey wrote that the experience taught him how to develop a marketing plan and helped him learn how to prepare budgets and financial statements. He also stated that he gained "self-confidence in managing my business".
South Texas Surface Preparation Co. is now open for business and is located at 728-A Diamond Cut Dr. , Corpus Christi , Texas . The business is doing well and has created two new jobs. |
