Farrell dreamed of one day opening his own functional training center, but his responsibilities to the university, coupled with his duties as the strength and conditioning coach for several of the Islanders' sports teams, didn't afford much time for planning. That changed last August, however, when he decided to resign his position with the university in order to concentrate all of his efforts toward achieving his dream. In September 2005, he contacted the Del Mar College Small Business Development Center for help structuring a business plan and loan proposal to open the first functional training facility in Corpus Christi . SBDC business advisor Michael North assisted him in preparing a detailed business plan with cash flow projections and financial statements.
After the plan and financials were complete, Farrell approached a non-bank lender, as well as some potential investors, for a loan. Before the bank completed their analysis of the loan request, one of Farrell's clients agreed to finance the fitness center. According to Farrell, "The business plan helped me put my business in realistic terms and created a blueprint for my business. Lengthy discussions with Mike on the feasibility of my venture helped create a realistic picture from the financial side of what it will take to get started and make this dream possible. I enjoyed working with Mike. He was very patient with someone who wanted everything done yesterday."
Farrell's dream of starting the first functional training center in Corpus Christi became a reality on May 16, 2006, when he formally opened the doors to Pinnacle Performance & Fitness with a ribbon cutting ceremony and equipment demonstration. Pinnacle Performance & Fitness is located behind Andy's Kitchen in Country Village Shopping Center at 5818 S. Staples Street , Suite B. The center specializes in functional training for individuals and small groups or teams, functional sports conditioning for athletes of all skill levels, CORE training, weight loss and regeneration, and also offers specific and personalized cardiovascular programs.
