Nathan and Jennifer always knew they wanted to work with pets. Jennifer even considered becoming a veterinarian. Their love for animals has always been evident through their generous volunteer efforts for local humane organizations. Jennifer and Nathan also found great reward in volunteering during the Hurricane Katrina Disaster to help shelter displaced pets.

In 2007, the Diaz's identified the need for an upscale pet care facility in Corpus Christi , and after much research they decided it was time to pursue their dream. They would create a state of the art resort where owners could take their dogs to be cared for, while they had to travel out of town. Financing became an issue, and the Diaz's quickly learned that they would need a business plan to present to a lender to acquire start-up capital.

Solution

They contacted the local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Del Mar College for assistance in creating a loan package. SBDC Business Counselor, Elizabeth Soliz provided industry research information, as well as assistance in business planning and financing resources.

The Diaz's were eventually approved for a loan, and also invested some of their own personal funds to complete the project. After several months of heavy construction, The Pooch Pad officially opened it's doors on August 31, 2006. The Pooch Pad is Corpus Christi's first premier pet resort consisting of 6000 square feet and will include overnight boarding with flat screen TV's, full grooming services, doggie daycare, a retail boutique, an indoor play park with artificial turf, and self bathing stations.

The Diaz's give enormous credit to all the family and friends that helped support them through all the hard work and preparation for opening their business.
