Yvonne Cantu-Moran, Funeral Director/Owner

Yvonne Cantu-Moran holds associate degrees in law enforcement and mortuary science, and is a licensed mortician with 16 years of experience in the funeral industry. After working for funeral homes in Liberty, Corpus Christi and Dayton, Texas, Yvonne set her sights on opening her own funeral home in her hometown of Sinton, Texas. Falling back on her law enforcement degree, Yvonne went to work for the Department of Public Safety in Sinton and continued saving money to start her business.

After her savings grew, Yvonne contacted the Del Mar College Small Business Development Center for help structuring a business plan and loan proposal. SBDC business advisor Michael North assisted her in preparing a detailed business plan with cash flow projections and financial statements. Unfortunately, Yvonne was denied a loan by several banks, all of whom cited concern with Sinton’s ability to support more than one funeral home as the reason for denial. Undeterred, Yvonne continued her endeavors to open a funeral home.

After her experience with banks, Yvonne decided to approach a non-bank SBA lender for financing. This lender was also concerned with Sinton’s ability to support two funeral homes and denied Yvonne’s loan request. However, as luck would have it, the lender forwarded Yvonne’s loan package to Prosper Bank in Frisco, Texas. Prosper Bank, while interested in the project, was also concerned with Sinton’s ability to support more than one funeral home. North helped Yvonne address the bank’s concerns with competition and market potential and Prosper Bank approved her for an SBA 7(a) loan! According to Yvonne, “Mr. North displayed a genuine interest and knowledge in the preparation of my business plan. He inherited my case, already had a tremendous workload, yet managed to effectively complete my plan in record time. Mr. North kept me abreast of our progress, was available to answer my questions and address my concerns at all times, and has continued to support and encourage my venture. With Mr. North’s help, I finally found a bank in Frisco willing to make me an SBA loan and Resthaven Funeral Home is now a reality. Yvonne’s dream of building her own funeral home did indeed become a reality and the doors to Resthaven Funeral Home were officially opened in March 2007.
