Would you like to learn about engineering and have fun at the same time?

Then Community Aerospace Scholars (CAS) is the spring semester educational program for you. When you become an aerospace scholar, you'll participate in web-based activities and an on-site team project. Other opportunities include a behind-the-scenes tour of Johnson Space Center (JSC) and interaction with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineers, educators, astronauts, and community college students from Texas.

Who's eligible to participate?

Three hundred community college students from across Texas will compete to participate in this program. To participate, you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen (permanent residents are NOT eligible)
  • At least 18 years of age
  • A Texas resident
  • A community college student pursuing an initial undergraduate degree
  • A community college student who has not previously attended a CAS event
  • Interested in computer science, engineering, math, and science
  • 2.5 GPA or higher and enrolled at least 6 hours at DMC
  • Able to commit to a one-semester relationship with NASA JSC, including a two-day experience during the spring semester in Houston at JSC, Spring 2008 dates: April 3, 4 & 5th, 2008
  • Able to access the Internet (home, school, or public library)
  • Able to complete requirements as established by your community college district

What will you do as an Aerospace Scholar?

The program includes interactive Web-based activities and a two-day on-site experience in Houston at JSC.

The Web-based activities include:

  • 3 - 4 four hours of pre-work
  • Online interaction with participants

The experience at NASA JSC includes:

  • Team project directed by NASA engineers
  • Engineer, scientist, and astronaut briefings
  • Tour of NASA JSC facilities

What's the timeline?

September:

  • Texas community colleges will receive information describing the program, selection guidelines, and roles in the selection process.

January - February:

  • Application and selection process for students begin. Community colleges nominate students

February:

  • NASA JSC notifies community college districts of their selection.
  • Districts notify the selected scholars.

March-April:

  • Students engage in Web-based assignments to learn more about space exploration and interact online with other participants.
  • Students will participate in a two-day long on-site experience at NASA JSC.

Who pays for CAS?

CAS is funded by the state of Texas and NASA, and administered by NASA JSC. Participants receive meals, lodging, and supplies at no charge. Transportation assistance will be available to those community college districts traveling more than 150 miles one way. There will be a $25 nonrefundable/transferable fee for each student and faculty point of contact.
