Advising Students Taking Government 2301 and/or 2302
State-mandated U.S. and Texas government courses
Effective Fall 2002, here are important guidelines to consider for students taking Government courses:
· The Texas Education Code requires all students in academic programs leading to an AA, an AS or a Bachelor's degree to complete 6 semester credit hours of coursework in U.S./Texas government and politics. At Del Mar College, those courses are GOVT 2301 (American Government I) and GOVT 2302 (American Government II).
· At least 3 of these 6 semester credit hours must provide instruction in the Texas constitution. At Del Mar College, GOVT 2301 is recognized as the course providing this instruction.
· The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board strongly encourages all students to complete the 6 semester credit hours at one college or university. For example, it is better for students to take both GOVT 2301 and 2302 at Del Mar OR take both POLS 2305 and 2306 at Texas A&M-CC.
· Students who have taken an introductory Government course at an out-of-state college or university should take GOVT 2301 at Del Mar College.
Students who have taken PS 2305 OR PS 2306 at another Texas college or university (including Texas A&M-CC) should take GOVT 2301 at Del Mar College.
The course equivalency between Del Mar and Texas A&M-Kingsville is as follows:
DEL MAR TAMU-K GOVT 2301 = POLS 2302 GOVT 2302 = POLS 2301 Students who plan on completing a four year degree are responsible for checking the college or university where they will ultimately graduate to determine transfer equivalencies.
