Discussions

[Revised: May 16, 2008]

The Discussion Area serves two purposes in this course.

1.  All of the general communication regarding Introductory Sociology is conducted in the discussion area.

2.  Plus, 10% of your grade will be based on participation in five required discussion sections.

Course Issues:  General Communication

I will use the course issues area to post events relating to Introductory Sociology.  For example, I tend to make posts in "Course Issues" when I have completed grading major assignments.

If students have specific questions concerning tests, the data projects, or the final, those questions should be raised on the discussion board.  If, for example, a student has questions regarding aspects of the data projects, chances are that other students might have similar concerns.

On the other hand, please DO NOT post data projects or personal mail in the discussion area.  Please send projects to me attached to an e-mail (inside Web-CT).

Class Credit Discussions

Ten percent of the course grade is tied to five sets of discussion that are conducted during the semester.

Each section will remain open for approximately a fifth of the semester.  Please note the dates that appear with each discussion section.

In order to receive credit in a given discussion section, the student should make at least three posts or replies (to some one else's posts).  The posts are not cumulative.   You have to begin again when each session becomes available.

Of course, students are welcome to make many more posts than the minimum of three.  Three posts get you the credit, but the discussion can go on far beyond the three posts.  You do NOT get more points for making more than three posts or replies.

After making a post, double check to make sure that your post appears in the discussion.  Once you make the post, you can click on the "update listings" button.  Your post should appear with your name.  Always keep track of the number of posts you are making.  Once closed, a discussion section will NOT be reopened for late arrivals.

The discussions are student-driven.  Students will pick topics themselves.  The instructor may take part in the discussions and may even offer items for discussion.  Generally, however, the discussions are carried on between students.

Topics:

  • Any item found in the lecture notes or in the text is fine for a discussion posting.
  • Any news story that involves Social Issues can be discussed.
  • Any historic items involving social issues are relevant for the discussion area.

Please be polite. In sociology we must agree to disagree, but we can do that with respect for alternate points of view.

Please, please, please tell me if you encounter problems in the course.
