I have divided the discussion area into sections that address the
major components of the course (e.g., the tests, reaction papers, and the final). If
students have specific questions concerning these items, the questions should be raised on
the discussion board. If, for example, a student has questions regarding aspects of
the reaction papers, chances are that other students might have similar concerns.
On the other hand, please DO NOT post reaction papers to the discussion area.
Please send reaction papers to me attached to an e-mail.
Students have an opportunity to earn up to four points extra credit
that will be added to the students final average.
There are four extra credit discussion areas designed to encourage
student interaction regarding pertinent issues in Sociology. Each section will
remain open for approximately a quarter of the semester. Please note the dates that
appear with each extra credit discussion section.
In order to receive an extra-credit point the student should
make at least three posts in the current session. The posts are not cumulative.
You have to begin again when each session becomes available.
In order to receive all four extra credit points, you must post 3
discussions in each of the four extra credit discussion areas for a total of 12 posts.
In order to get credit for a post, the student can either offer a
new post regarding any issue in Sociology or the student can respond to an existing
post.
Of course, students are welcome to make many more posts than the
minimum of three. Three posts get you the extra credit point, but the discussion can
go on far beyond the three posts, but you only get one point per extra credit discussion
section.
After making a post double check to make sure that your post appears
in the discussion. Once you make the post, you can click on the "update
listings" button. Your post should appear with your name. Always keep
track of the number of posts you are making. Once closed, a discussion section will
NOT be reopened for late arrivals.
Topics:
- Any item found in the lecture notes or in the text is fine for a
discussion posting.
- Any news story that involves Social Issues can be discussed.
- Any historic items involving social issues are relevant for the
discussion area.
Please be polite. In sociology we must agree
to disagree, but we can do that with respect for alternate points of view.
Please, please, please tell me if you encounter problems in the
course.
