Special Services - Assistive Technology
The assistive technology is available for use by any student with a disability who is registered with the Office of Special Services.What is assistive technology?
Assistive technology is defined as any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional abilities. (Tech Act of 1988) It is the use of technology to provide equal access to information.
Where is the assistive technology located?
Located in the White Library, Rm. 105, East Campus
e -+Reading Edge from Xerox Imaging Systems - scans print to disk or tape. This stand alone scanner performs similarly to a copy machine with voice output that reads documents aloud. This reading machine scans one page at a time with a multiple column document option. Features include: optical character recognition and high quality speech synthesis.

Arkenstone Software with Open Book: Ruby Edition (version 4.02) software combines components from the top two award, wining optical character recognition (OCR) providers to create the best reading system on the market. With fast, accurate recognition and superior page layout, Open Book allows you to read print material and electronic files, identify, currency, and perform sophisticated editing functions. The Ruby Edition also offers Open Book's historically easy-to-use interface in addition to a standard windows interface. Open Book: Ruby Edition requires an IBM-compatible Pentium class PC with a sound card, Windows 95-98 or NT 4.0, a minimum of 32MB RAM and a supported scanner. Open Book includes IBM's Via Voice Outloud Text-to-speech synthesis software.

American Printing House for the Blind - Handi-Cassette Tape Recorder. Features: 4 track record and play capability, Variable speed playback. These tape recorders are designed to provide optimum record and playback capability.
Ultratec Superprint Pro TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) This is the newest, most advanced TDD with the following features.
- Auto ID:sends several Baudot characters every few seconds if there is a pause during conversation.
- + Saves and prints conversations, if desired.
- Announces by recorded voice that you are using a TDD
Comtec wireless systems- These wireless systems use transmitters and receivers to allow hearing in difficult listening situations:
- The Transmitter is a battery-powered belt pack used with a microphone (included) to convert sound into an FM signal
- The Receiver is also battery-powered and is used with an earphone (also included) to hear the radio signal sent by the transmitter.
- Also has a T-switch capacity with a neckloop. (included)
Conference Mate- Battery powered wireless transmitter listening device.
The Special Services Office offers programs and support services to assist students in overcoming obstacles to education.
