SE 100
Keyboarding
Syllabus
Description : A course designed to improve your typing and computer skills by becoming proficient and accurate on the keyboard. Correct finger positions and ways to increase speed and accuracy will be covered. An excellent course to take either before or while taking "Introduction to Personal Computers/Windows."

Course Purpose/Objectives : Upon successful completion of this class, students should be able to:

  • Use the complete personal computer system keyboard, including disks and printers.
  • Demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques.
  • Key straight-copy alphabetic material for three minutes at a minimum of 25 words per minute (wpm).
  • Key copy with top-row numbers using proper touch techniques to a minimum 20 wpm.
  • Key copy containing frequently used symbols a minimum of 20 wpm.
  • Key numeric copy using correct touch techniques on the ten-key numeric keypad.
  • Use selected personal computer special function keys.
  • Develop keyboarding composition skills.
  • Understand computer terminology.

Length of Course : 18 hours

Materials : Students will be given course handouts that will include keyboard exercises.

Software : Windows 98 & Windows XP will be used.

Teaching Methods :

Although individual instructors may vary, essentially this class is conducted in a hands-on environment. Students will be expected to follow the directions of the instructor and to complete assigned tasks. These activities will help insure successful completion of the course. This course requires much time be spent by the student in practicing on his/her own time between class meetings. During the last class meeting, students will be evaluated on their skill proficiency.

Introduction to PC's/Windows Syllabus
Description : This course prepares the student for all Senior Education computer courses offered at Del Mar College. It is designed for people with little or no prior computer training in a hands-on environment. You will learn the basics of operating a computer. This is a study of personal computers, file creation/deletion, data entry and manipulation, automatic file execution, configuration, and directory commands.

Course Purpose/Objectives : Upon successful completion of this class, students should:

  • Understand the Basics of Computer Components and Operations
  • Understand and Operate a Computer in a Windows Environment
  • Understand Application Software
  • Understand the basic principles of the Internet and Email.

Length of Course: 12 hours

Description: This introductory course will familiarize the student with the procedures and terminology of sending and receiving electronic mail.

Course Purpose/Objectives:

  1. To teach the student how to use, send and received Electronic mail.
  2. To teach the student how to set up and use an Address Book.
  3. To teach the student how to organize Electronic mail into folders and files.
  4. To teach the student how to send and receive Electronic mail attachments.

Length of Course: 24 hours

Prerequisites: Successful completion of SE 101, 102 and 103 or "Skill/Placement Test." Typing skills of 20 wpm is strongly recommended

Surfing the Net
Syllabus
Description: Through Hands-on exercises using Internet Explorer, the student will become familiar with Internet operations and learn to travel the information highway. This course is an introduction to the Internet including e-mail, home page, and how to perform basic research to address company/business needs.

Course Purpose/Objectives:

  1. To teach the student how to use Internet Explorer.
  2. To teach the student how to use Front Page Express
  3. To assist the student understanding the Internet and its applications

Length of Course: 24 hours

Prerequisites: Successful completion of SE 101, SE 102 and SE 103. Or "Skill Test/Placement." It is strongly recommended that the student have the ability to type 20 wpm.

Description: This course will teach the student word processing basics using Word's capabilities. A word processing program allows the user to create and edit documents. This course includes instruction in terminology, computer operation, editing, function, formatting, and special text options. The student will become familiar with these features and many more through hands-on exercises and practice.

Description: Building on SE 106 and work experience, this course explores advanced capabilities of Microsoft Word. Some techniques from SE 106 will be reviewed. Includes a study of production techniques including search and replace functions, headers and footers, spell checker, mail merge, file functions, and printer set-up, the use of macros for automating the document, text handling, and graphics.

Course Purpose/Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have reached the fundamental skill level that will enable them to take the other courses that are offered by the Del Mar College Senior Education Computer Program.

Length of Course: 24 hours.
