Biotechnology at Del Mar College

Del Mar College’s Biotechnology program will offer students the opportunity to pursue a 1-year technical certificate or a 2-year Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Biotechnology.  The technical certificate and AAS degrees in Biotechnology are designed to prepare graduates for employment in the biotechnology industry.

Biotechnology courses are anticipated to cover current research and laboratory procedures in biotechnology and its uses in agriculture, industry and medicine.  The program will be offered at Del Mar College beginning in Fall 2008.

What is Biotechnology?

Biotechnology can be thought of as the fusion of biology and technology.  In broad terms, biotechnology is the industrial use of living organisms or parts of living organisms to produce foods, drug, or other products. As an industry, biotechnology is still less than 20 years old and is expected to increase in importance during the 21st century; however, it has been used since the beginning of civilization.  Some of the oldest biotechnologies include fermentation and plant and animal hybridization. Newer biotechnologies include protein separation technologies and genomics.  A number of fields fall under the umbrella of biotechnology.  Some of these include:
