The Surgical Technology curriculum
is designed to offer education to qualified persons who seek employment
in the operating room under the supervision and responsibility of the registered
nurse supervisor. They also aid the circulating nurse in performance of
all duties related to the care of patients in the operating room.
The Surgical Technology program
operates under the standards and accreditation of the Joint Review Committee
on Education for the Surgical Technologist.
Graduates of this program are
entitled to a Certificate of Achievement. They are also eligible to take
the National Examination given by the Association of Surgical Technologists.
Those who pass this examination become Certified Surgical Technologists
(CST).
All subjects listed in the
curriculum are required for graduation. Any or all of the general education
courses listed may be taken prior to admission to the program.
When courses are not taken
prior to their listed place, they must be completed in sequence.
TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
The Texas Department of Health implemented a new rule
regarding vaccinations effective April 2004. It came to our attention from one of the
colleges that all institutions may not be aware of this new rule. This is NOT a Coordinating Board
rule. We are passing the information along as a courtesy for those who may not be aware of it.
The rule is Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part I, Chapter 97, Subchapter B, Rules 97.62, 97.64,97.65. Basically, this says that all health professions students "shall receive a complete series of Hepatitis B vaccine prior to the start of direct patient care or show Serologic confirmation of immunity to Hepatitis B virus." Rule 97.2 provides the procedure that must be followed for students to claim a declination for medical, religious, or conscience reasons or for service in the military.
