architectural and drafting

The technical content of this program is intended to supply a wide background in the diverse areas of applied architecture and construction, including computer-aided drafting. In the first year, the student should acquire a foundation in architectural drawing, building materials, and methods of construction, along with training in mathematics, physics, and communication skills. In the second year, the student should build on this background and take up commercial building types in architecture and construction, as well as surveying, building service systems, contracts, codes, specifications, computer applications, and estimating. The student planning to continue at a senior college should consult an advisor concerning degree requirements of the college to which transfer is intended.

Architects provide a wide variety of professional services to individuals and organizations planning a construction project. They may be involved in all phases of development, from the initial discussion of general ideas with the client through construction. Their duties require a number of skills-design, engineering, managerial, communication, and supervisory. In developing design architects follow building codes, zoning laws, fire regulations, and other ordinances, such as those that require easy access by disabled persons. Although they have traditionally used pencil and pare to produce design and construction drawings, architects are increasingly turning to computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) technology for these important tasks.

Architects generally work in a comfortable environment. Most of their time is spent in offices advising and developing reports and drawings. At times, they also work at construction sites reviewing the progress of the projects.
