Dr. Jonda Halcomb

Vice President and Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Jonda Halcomb has served as Del Mar College’s Vice President and Chief Academic Officer since May 1, 2021. From May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021, Dr. Halcomb served as the Interim Vice President and Chief Academic Officer. Prior to assuming the interim position, Dr. Halcomb served as Interim Dean and Dean of the Arts and Sciences Division between October 2009 and April 2020. Prior to that position, she served as the Chair of the Natural Sciences Department for over three years and received tenured status during that time.

Dr. Halcomb taught biology as an Adjunct Professor for both Del Mar College (DMC) and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi before joining the DMC faculty full time in 2002. Prior to teaching at the secondary level, she served first as a Graduate Research Assistant and then as an Assistant Research Scientist for the Texas A&M University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Her career also includes teaching math and science to middle and high school-level students before moving into research and then instruction in higher education.

As an educator, Dr. Halcomb has taught various levels of biology to both science majors and non-majors and has been very involved with the College’s curriculum development. She has served on innumerable campus and departmental committees ranging from budget and faculty review and promotion to construction, grant proposals (National Science Foundation) and student learning (including E-learning) among many others. Among current committees, Dr. Halcomb serves on the SACSCOC Steering Committee for the College’s reaccreditation, the DMC Guided Pathways Committee, the Instruction and Student Development and Developmental Education Councils, and the College’s Strategic Planning Committee.

She also currently serves on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Academic Course Guide Manual Committee; and community involvement includes membership on the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History Board.

Dr. Halcomb holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Entomology degree from Texas A&M University in College Station, a Master of Science in Biology degree from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from Loma Linda University (California), and an Associate of Science in Physical Education degree from Chaffey College (California). At Indiana University and at the University of Indianapolis, Dr. Halcomb also completed graduate level coursework. Additionally, she received a teaching credential from California State Polytechnic University.
