WELCOME TO THE DEL MAR COLLEGE VIRTUAL VIKING SUMMER MUSIC CAMP!

Due to the nature of the virtual music camp experience, we are offering a wide variety of activities that will benefit students of all age levels from 7th grade to adult.

The DMC Summer Camp is offering beginner/intermediate/advanced instrumental music instruction with some of our professions finest music educators and performers. We're partnering with Musically Yours, a company that is designed for teaching music and leadership skills, for a wide variety of musical experiences. If you are in color guard please inform us and Musically Yours will plan accordingly to have a session that is geared towards your needs.

In addition, we are also offering some amazing percussion clinics hosted by world renown percussionists Lalo Davila and Julie Davila. These experiences will include classes ranging from percussion techniques to marching drum line.

Lastly, students will have the opportunity of a lifetime to learn from world renown composer and conductor, Justin Freer, who will offer insights on numerous topics regarding real-world career opportunities in the music industry.

We are very excited to offer this unique opportunity during this most challenging time. It is our goal to provide you with an opportunity to experience music in ways that we have never done before!  We appreciate your interest and support for our very first Virtual Summer Music Camp at Del Mar College.

Daily Online Camp Schedule July 13-16

Monday, July 13, 9:30 AM: CAMP OPENING AND WELCOME MEETING
The camp will begin with an opening meeting where we will discuss all of the guidelines for the week.  After this first opening session, every scheduled daily event will begin by signing into ONE ZOOM MEETING.  We will then send you to your assigned break out rooms where instruction will begin immediately. 

MORNING CLASSES: The morning classes are dedicated to warm up routines, fundamentals and master classes. 

10:00-10:50 AM: SECTION WARM UP AND FUNDAMENTALS for both middle school and high school students. All materials will be emailed to you after your payment has been received.

11:00-11:50 AM:  MASTERCLASSES for both middle school and high school students. All materials will be emailed to you after your payment has been received.

AFTERNOON CLASSES:  The afternoon times are for your ELECTIVES!

CAMP ELECTIVES (Please choose 1 elective from each time slot)

1:00-1:50 PM: Percussion Techniques; Color Guard Techniques; Drum Major Techniques, Marching Band Fundamentals/Techniques (Please choose one elective from this group.)

2:00-2:50 PM: Drum Line Techniques; Composing and Conducting in Film and Media; History of Rock and Roll; History of the Horn; Leadership (Please choose one elective from this group.)

CAMP ELECTIVE Descriptions

Percussion Techniques:  Students will receive instruction from world renown percussionists, Lalo Davila, on the art of becoming a “complete percussionists.”  The focus will be on percussion accessories. 

Color Guard Techniques:  Intended for students planning to participate in their schools color guard.  You will learn fundamental and advanced techniques from the faculty and staff members from Musically Yours! REQUIREMENTS: You must have your own flag.  It is preferred that you take this course outdoors and please wear athletic clothing.

Drum Major Techniques:  This class is intended for students who plan to audition for drum major at their schools and for those students who want to improve their present conducting skills. The clinicians for this course are Joey Salinas, a Drum Major for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps and staff members from Musically Yours!

Marching Band Fundamentals:  designed for middle school and high school students. You will learn the techniques of the most successful Texas High School Marching Bands!  The clinicians include staff members from Musically Yours!

Drum Line Techniques:  Students will receive instruction from one of our professions most highly respected and successful percussionists, Julie Davila. Sessions will include marching bass drums, tenors and much, much more.

Composing and Conducting in Film and Media: So, you want to write for film in HOLLYWOOD!! You want to conduct bands and orchestras from around the world!! In this elective course, Justin Freer, will offer practical guidance and insight into the real world of composing and conducting at the hightest levels in the music profession. The History of Rock and Roll: Del Mar College Associate Professor of Trombone/Low Brass, Donald Pinson will share interesting and unique insights into the history and future of rock and roll.

History of the Horn:  Del Mar College professor, Karl Kemm, has turned his passion for horns into a documentary. It’s called “The Story of the Horn.” A collection of them — from around the world — fill the walls of his office. His documentary examines the various types of horns that people have used throughout history and why.

Leadership Training:  Learn the necessary skills for leadership positions in your home band or orchestra from one of Texas’ most beloved and respected teachers, John Dominguez, Director of Bands at John Paul Stevens High School and Professor John Burdett, renown conductor from Azusa Pacific University in California.

Your $75 registration fee is all inclusive, HOWEVER, you are welcome to participate in only those classes that interest you. You are not required to participate everyday if you so choose.
