National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show logoThe Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show attracts works by contemporary artists across the country and is judged by a guest juror of national stature. Resulting Purchase Awards have built an impressive Permanent Collection at Del Mar College.

This year’s 53rd show runs February 15, 2019, with an opening reception from 6-8 p.m., and closing May 3, 2019. Accepted artwork is displayed in the distinctive Joseph A. Cain Memorial Gallery.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Carlton Bradford earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the University of Arizona in 1986. He returned to teaching sculpture at the UofA in 2002 and became an Associate professor in 2011 in the 3D and Extended Media Division. He teaches undergraduate and graduate classes with a specialty in metal and wood fabrication. Before that he taught sculpture at the College of Marin, Kentfield, California from 1989-1995. During this time, he exhibited with the Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco. Carlton has exhibited his work over his forty-year career in many solo and group exhibitions. Earlier in his career he worked as an assistant to several professional sculptors in various media (all aspects of foundry work, carving and fabricating wood sculpture, and large-scale metal fabrication and installation).

ELIGIBLE ENTRIES

The exhibition is open to all* U.S. artists. Only work created in the last three years can be entered. Previously exhibited works in the Annual Show will not be eligible. Each artist may submit three works.  All accepted artwork can be considered for purchase. *Full-time Del Mar Art faculty members are excluded.

ENTRY PROCEDURE - ONLINE ONLY

All submissions will be through CallForEntry.org. Entries must be submitted on or before December 1, 2018. No entries will be accepted after this date.

Upload requirements for image files:

  • File format: JPEG only
  • File dimensions: No smaller than 1920 pixels on the longest side
  • File resolution: 72 ppi/dpi (standard web resolution)
  • File size: 3 MB maximum
  • Image must be correctly oriented (vertical or horizontal)
  • Maximum of 6 photos per entry, 2 views for each sculpture, and 1 view per 2-D work

FEE

$20 flat fee for up to three entries, one image per 2-D Artwork two images per Sculpture. All fees are non-refundable and payable through CallForEntry.org.

ACCEPTED WORK

Artists will be notified via email; status updates can be found by logging into your CaFÉ account. The juror may elect to reject artwork after arrival.

2-D ARTWORK

All original works on paper will be considered, this includes drawing, printmaking in traditional media, original watercolor, and photography. Professional presentation of accepted artwork is required. Acetate covering is acceptable with white museum quality mat board with at least 2" mounting and over-mat visible on all sides. To ensure consistency in presentation, if your work is framed, please use simple frames. Ship framed works with Plexiglas ONLY. Artwork must be shipped in stiff, reusable cardboard packaging, securely packed to insure safe delivery (no peanuts). Refer to size specifications below.

SCULPTURE

Sculptures of any media will be considered. However, sculptures requiring ceiling suspended installation will not be accepted. Accepted sculptures should be securely packed within one crate to insure safe delivery. If crate is wooden, use screws—not nails or bolts—to secure lid. Refer to size specifications below.

SIZE AND MAILING SPECIFICATIONS

  • All accepted works must have Identification Cards
  • All mailing crates should not exceed 108 inches, the length plus girth, and must not exceed 70 lbs. in weight.
  • Crates and artwork that do not meet size requirements will be returned.
  • Ship framed works with Plexiglas ONLY.
  • Work may be sent to Del Mar College by any transportation mode, including hand delivery, but only artwork that can be returned via FedEx or Parcel Post will be considered for the exhibition. Accepted work needs to arrive before January 29, 2019.

LIABILITY

  • All works submitted are at the artist’s own responsibility; any insurance must be arranged by the artist while artwork is in transit and for the duration of the show.
  • All accepted artwork will be handled with professional care; however, staff, volunteers and Del Mar College cannot be responsible for any loss or damage.
  • Damaged crates will remain unopened pending notification of the carrier and artist.
  • Work unclaimed by sender at return address on crate is not responsibility of the College.

AGREEMENT AND COPYRIGHT

Acceptance to the 53rd Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show is an agreement by the artist to all terms set forth in this “Call for Entries.” Permission is granted to photograph and reproduce artwork for the catalog, other print or electronic media; future show promotions; education; and publicity.

RETURN OF ARTWORK

Accepted artwork will be returned by May 31, 2019.
