Grade Point Average

Del Mar College uses a four (4.0) point system of grading. Grades are given upon completion of a course.

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by multiplying the semester-hour value of the course by the point value in which a completion grade of “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” “F,” “R,” or “P” was earned. For example, 3 semester hours with a grade of a “B” equates to 9 grade points.

How GPA is calculated

GPA is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the number of semester credit hours taken for a qualitative grade.

1. Multiply each grade by the number of credit hours for that course.
2. Total the Semester Credit Hours and Grade Points.

Course Grade Semester
Credit Hours
Grade Points
ACNT 1303 A = 4 X 3 = 12
COMM 1307 B = 3 X 3 = 9
HIST 1302 A = 4 X 3 = 12
MATH 1314 C = 2 X 4 = 8
Totals: 13 41

3. Divide the total Grade Points by the total Credit Hours:

41 divided by 13 = 3.15 GPA
