Program Overview

The Electrician program offers intensive career preparation through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practice.  The Electrical Trades area is a highly sought after construction trade and listed on the Workforce Solutions Target Occupations List showing a need of 1,435 jobs, and Projections Central shows an estimated growth rate for electrician jobs in Texas at 14.07%.  Electrical Trades programs follow a structured apprenticeship program and licensing process.  This program aligns with this process.

Earnings

Median annual salaries for electricians in the region are $24.18 per hour ($50,295 annually).

Curriculum

The Electrician program curriculum offers training in basic electrical theory, industry safety, National Electric Codes, residential, commercial, and industrial wiring, motors and transformers, electrical testing and maintenance, and electrical and power transmission.  The student is provided the practical training necessary to function as an entry-level electrician and prepares the student for the Journeyman Electrician License Exam.  The program curriculum also contains OSHA 30 card and NCCER Core and Electrical Curriculum.

This program includes the complete curriculum from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Residential/Commercial Electrician and Industrial Electrician Programs of Study.  Students planning to continue at a senior college should consult an advisor concerning degree requirements of the college to which transfer is intended.

The Occupational Skills Award:  Electrical Helper program will begin course offerings Spring 2022.  The remaining program area award course offerings shall begin Fall 2022.  (AAS:  Electrician, Level II Certificate:  Industrial Electrician, Level I Certificate:  Residential/Commercial Electrician)
