Technical Standards

Employment Qualifications

  • Students must be free from contagious diseases and chemical dependence.
  • Students must be able to perform all functions and tasks required of a MLT.
  • Students must not have been convicted of a felony.

Visual Observations

  • Differentiate color changes during performance of laboratory procedures.
  • Observe patient's condition during phlebotomy procedures.
  • Read lab instrument technical procedures manuals, standard operating procedures, patient's charts and other pertinent materials for patient care and professional practice.

Motor Function

  • Perform venipuncture at patient's bedside or at other designated locations.
  • Lift and handle medical technology equipment and tools.
  • Manipulate medical laboratory instruments and equipment in a manner consistent with standards of medical laboratory practice.

Communications Skills

  • The student shall possess verbal and nonverbal skills adequate for transmitting information to patients and others.
  • Adequate hearing for communication skills with both the hospital and patients.

Behavioral and Social Skills

  • Student behavior and social skills must be acceptable to a college
    and hospital setting.
