Associate of Arts in English with emphasis in Literature

Getting an AA degree in English with an emphasis in Literature encourages students to explore Literature and apply critical analysis to a variety of texts. Additionally, courses in this degree plan promote critical thinking, written communication, and research skills.

Associate of Arts in Teaching Grades 8-12 with Emphasis in English

Getting an AA degree in Teaching Grades 8-12 with an emphasis in English prepares students for a potential career teaching high school level English. This satisfies the lower-division requirements for bachelor’s degrees leading to initial Texas teacher certification in all 8-12 and specialized EC - 12 certification areas.

Associate of Arts in English with emphasis in Philosophy

While adding an emphasis on critical thinking, argumentation, and the history of thought, the English Degree with Philosophy emphasis maintains the same strong focus on reading and writing that is characteristic with the English Degrees at Del Mar College.

Career Opportunities

"Why Major In English?" One misconception about being "an English major" is that it will lead to a career teaching grammar and Shakespeare - and not much else. The reality, however, is that majoring in English not only strengthens skills in writing, but also fosters critical analysis, provides a sound foundation in expression through language, and opens doorways to a broad range of career choices in the fields of academics, professional settings, creative arts, legal or political work, and journalism.
