OWNING HER DREAMS

“I’m the first in my family to graduate with a degree…Del Mar College made that possible…”

How did DMC help set you on your course to achieve your dreams?

“I’m the first in my family to graduate with a degree in higher education. Del Mar College made that possible, first with my associate’s degree and later when I obtained my bachelor’s degree through the University of the Incarnate Word Adult Degree Completion Program, which resided in DMC’s Center for Economic Development. The flexibility in the courses offered at DMC made it possible for a student like me who worked full-time to be able to take classes in the evening and online and opened up new doors in my career.”

What is your best memory from your experience at DMC?

“I have so many wonderful memories. I spent the better part of 10 years working to achieve my two-year degree. I moved out of my parents’ house when I was 18 and from that point on, I worked a full-time job at a local law firm and took classes when I could. But I would have to say that the graduation ceremony was my favorite DMC experience. To know that my parents’ dreams were achieved through me and seeing that moment revealed on their faces when I walked the stage was the best feeling in the world. The pride in my dad’s eyes is a memory that I still hold dear now that he is gone.”

What advice would you give others who may be considering attending DMC?

“Do it! Don’t wait as long as I did. There is so much flexibility in scheduling classes and many types of programs offered. Take advantage of the opportunity and the scholarships. You won’t regret it.”

“DMC changed my life because…”

“In 2012, I worked a temporary position for DMC Corporate Services as a training coordinator. In that role, I became an ambassador for the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce which sparked such a passion in me to serve my community. From that point on to this day, I still serve in various capacities to make our community a better place to live and work. In 2015, I was honored as DMC’s Distinguished Young Alumnus for my commitment to community. Being able to fulfill a core value of mine in various career paths has changed my life and made it so much more rewarding.”
